Governor Al-makura, Senator Adamu Victims Of Blabbermouth?

By Rayyanu Bala
The political development in Nasarawa state especially within the
ruling APC in the last one week confirmed the fears expressed by
many regarding relationship between Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura and
Senator Abdullahi Adamu. Before this unfortunate development, there
were rumours making the rounds to effect that ‘all is no longer well’
in the relationship between the two APC gladiators in the state.
Report had it that there is a sharp disagreement existing between the
two of them over who to govern the state after Al-makura leave office
in 2019. The insinuations are that Senator Abdullahi Adamu is neither
in support of zoning APC governorship slot to Nasarawa North nor the
choice of Engr A A sule as the next governor. Sources closed to
Senator Abdullahi Adamu revealed that he (Senator Adamu) never conceal
his preference for governorship slot to go to his Nasarawa West.
Sources say that Senator Abdullahi Adamu hinged his choice for
Nasarawa West based on consensus arrived at, at a meeting held with
his constituents, arguing that since democracy is a game of number
then governorship must go to Nasarawa West this time around.
While on the other side of the gladiator, Governor Umaru Tanko
Al-makura, the Nasarawa North must take the shot in 2019 soak up on
euphoria of justice and fairness. According to the source closed to
Governor Al-makura, the choice of Nasarawa North by Al-makura was to
ensure justice and fairness to the people of Nasarawa North. They (
Al-makura’s side) noted that since Nasarawa North have never had the
opportunity of producing the governor of Nasarawa state, for justice
and fairness, the slot should go to them, in spite of their not having
the number.
On the choice of person to fly the flag of APC as governorship
candidate, Governor Al-makura is rumoured to favour Engr A A Sule from
the Nasarawa North while Senator Abdullahi Adamu is allegedly said to
be on the side of Arc Jafaru Muhammed Ibrahim from Nasarawa West.
These two issues to wit, the choice of Engr A A Sule and zoning of
governorship slot to Nasarawa North by Governor Al-makura, were on the
surface, said to be at the centered of the acrimony between Governor
Al-makura and Senator Abdullahi Adamu. It is an open secret that this
acrimony between these two gladiators did not only reached its
crescendo but became public last week ending the speculations on rift
between them, when Governor Al-makura was alleged to have obtained an
APC senatorial form for his Commissioner of Education Aliyu Tijjani to
contest against Senator Abdullahi Adamu in the forthcoming party
primaries. And to demonstrate his commitment towards realizing his
dream of shifting power to Nasarawa North and on his adoption of Engr
A A sule, Governor Al-makura summoned all his political appointees and
made it abundantly clear, for the first time, to them that he has
conceded zoning of governorship slot to Nasarawa North and the choice
of Engr A A Sule as his successor come 2019.
In what should go as swift reaction to what some political observers
described as Governor Al-makura’s ‘onslaught against Senator Adamu’
Senator Abdullahi Adamu was said to have also held a meeting in Keffi
with some select group of people from his Nasarawa West on a way
forward regarding Governor Al-makura’ stance with respect of his
zoning of governorship slot to Nasarawa North, his choice of Engr A A
Sule and his push to dethrone him (Senator Adamu) from the senate.
At the meeting Senator Abdullahi Adamu was quoted to have said: “Ban
ci amanar Al-makura da APC ba, kar ya ci amanata’ This simply
translated to mean ‘I have never betrayed Al-makura and the APC so let
him not betray me” However, looking at Senator Adamu’s statement with
shrewd mind, one will be left with no option than to conclude that
beneath what is in the surface, there is something ‘resentful’ between
the duo which we the ordinary mortals don’t know.
Political observers in Nasarawa state alleged however that beyond
these permutations surrounding zoning of governorship slot to Nasarawa
North, the choice of Engr A A Sule and the push to replace Senator
Adamu with Aliyu Tijjani by governor Al-makura, there is what some
refers to as ‘envy and backbiting’ at the background of these
conflicts threatening the cohesion of APC in Nasarawa state and
inspiring Governor Al-makura and Senator Adamu to go for each other
jugular.
Whatever is between the two of them, what is certain is: both of them
are unfortunate victims of blabbermouth which of –course, they must do
everything possible to guard themselves against. Yes gossips can cause
unimaginable injury or destruction to friendship and relationship just
the way it has caused Governor Al-makura and Senator Adamu.
In one of my article published six months ago entitled: “Nasarawa:
Between Huge Potentials and Proclivity for Envy” (Leadership
Newspaper, 15/03/2018 and in another entitled: “Is Backbiting
Nasarawa’s New Trade? (Leadership Newspaper, 26/03/2018) I lamented
how gossiping and backbiting becomes the only thriving business in
Nasarawa state.
The brawl today between Governor Al-makura and Senator Abdullahi Adamu
are nothing but an offshoot of envy, gossiping and backbiting which
has indeed, become our new trade in Nasarawa state.
Of- course, the punch-up between Governor Al-makura and Senator
Abdullahi Adamu will do no good to anybody particularly their
followers, admirers and the APC. Governor Al-makura and Senator Adamu
must realize that this time is not a good time for them to go for each
other jugular. They must understand that if they allow their
disagreement to hang-on between them, certainly they will become an
object of teasing. They must also be conscious of the fact that they
all need each other for the APC to survive in the state. They must put
APC interest as well as President Muhammadu Buhari’s interest above
any other primordial considerations.
For long, the existing cordiality between the Governor Al-makura and
Senator Abdullahi Adamu has been a source of worry to their
detractors; therefore they (Governor Al-makura and Senator Adamu) must
not allow these detractors to have a last laugh. They must put a shame
to gossipmongers and purveyors of backbite. And they can only shame
these detractors, gossipmongers and purveyors of backbite by burying
whatever resentments they nursed against each other and chart a
direction that will be of best interest to the people of Nasarawa
state, the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari. Since time is of the
essence they must act now. When two elephants fight, grass must suffer
goes the adage. We the ordinary mortals in Nasarawa state are the ones
to suffer if the brawl between these political gladiators continues.
We can not afford the suffering, just as we can not afford loosing
Nasarawa state to opposition party.
