
Governor Abdullahi A. Sule of Nasarawa state has stated that the state has 13 different types of solid minerals which if adequately harnessed could provide millions of jobs to the people of Nasarawa state.
Speaking while on a courtesy visit to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Solid Minerals In Abuja, Governor Sule stressed the need for proper exploration and mining of the mineral deposits in the state.
He said also when properly explored, solid minerals sub sector alone could lift our people out of poverty.
While urging the ministry to revoke all inactive licenses issued to people for purpose of mining in the state, Gov. Sule also maintained “If there are people that are not interested in operating those licenses, why don’t you revoke them and give them to those who are interested so as to promote economic activities in our state,”
Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry ,Dr Abdulkadir Muazu revealed that out of 351 licenses and leases issued for exploration and mining in Nasarawa State, only 19 are active.
He said in spite of the huge mineral endowment of Nasarawa state, the level of exploration and exploitation was still low.
He however said there are a lot of illegal mining activities going on in the state which according to him, if legalised will lead to economic and social development for the people of the state and also enhance the revenue base of the state.
