Last week, NERC transferred its powers regarding the regulations of Discos to the Ekiti State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (EERB) and the Ondo Electricity Regulatory Bureau (OSERB) in compliance with the amended constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electricity Act (EA) 2023, which was recently signed by President Bola Ahemed Tinubu. Apart from Ekiti and Ondo, NERC also transferred such powers to the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Since in Nasarawa state we already have NAePA a body charge with such responsibilities, we don’t have any reason not to seek the transfer of NERC powers to the state. AEDC has indeed become a problem for the people of Nasarawa State, requiring stiffer measures to address these problems, which have become a cancerworm, a storm in the flash of the people of Nasarawa. Our people have for long been forced to pay for darkness through the manipulative efforts of AEDC. This paper has been at the forefront of campaigning against the oppressive overbilling of customers by AEDC. In our numerous publications, we highlighted how AEDC is ripping the people of Nasarawa without let or hinderence from any quarters. Through these publications, some good-spirited individuals took the gun by dragging AEDC to court over this exploitation. The case we learned about is still pending before High Court 5 in Lafia. While we commend these individuals, we would also like to commend the Nasarawa State House of Assembly for the invitation they extended to AEDC to appear before it to answer some questions pertaining to overbilling of customers amidst the absence of electricity. We strongly believe that when Nasarawa State gets NERC powers firmly in her hands, all the issues surrounding the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in the state will be squarely addressed. Time to act is now.
