Editorial: On 14 days NSHA Ultimatum to AEDC

Firstly, we want to commend the State House of Assembly under the able leadership of  Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau for the pursuance of good programmes that have direct bearings on the life of a common man in Nasarawa State. In particular, our appreciation is for the concern the House has shown for the deplorable state of electricity supply by the AEDC to the people of Nasarawa State. The manner in which members of the House conducted themselves when the MD of AEDC appeared before the House was fantastic and encouraging. In view of this, we want to stress that the 14-day ultimatum issued to AEDC by the House needs to be carefully monitored to avoid any deception, since AEDC is known for being deceptive. Now, almost nine days into this ultimatum, nothing significant has been recorded in terms of improvement in the supply of electricity to the residents of Lafia and its environs. This paper wants to bring to the attention of the House that AEDC consumers of electricity on Marraraban Akunza 33/11 KVA sub-station have not enjoyed any improvement in the supply of electricity since the ultimatum was issued. Consumers on Makurdi Road, Lafia down-town, Doma Road, and some parts of Lafia East are still grappling with darkness despite the ultimatum. The story is almost the same with consumers along Shendam Road, Jos Road, GRA, and some parts of Tudun Gwandara who are on the 33/11KVA sub-station near Tanko Al-Makura’s House along Shendam Road. It is our firm conviction that the Hon. House will take notice of these observations in arriving at its decisions on the AEDC after the expiration of this ultimatum. It is gratifying to note that the speaker of the House, while welcoming the leadership of the Market Association on a courtesy visit to the House yesterday, reiterated the commitment of the House towards getting to the root of AEDC’s exploitation—excessive billing without a consistent supply of electricity. What is even more gratifying is the revelation by the speaker that the House has even started shopping for the AEDC replacement. The good people of Nasarawa State are indeed one hundred percent with you. Keep it up.
