Governor Abdullahi Sule has expressed his satisfaction with the progress of work on the Jangwa rice farm, which is part of the ten thousand hectares of land being cultivated by the Nasarawa State Government aimed at ensuring food security.
Governor Sule, who undertook an inspection tour of the rice farm in Jangwa, Awe Local Government Area on Saturday, commended both the management of the farm, as well as the state Ministry of Agriculture, on the progress of work so far made.
The Governor was particularly happy because instead of confronting several challenges as earlier envisaged, the progress of work on the farm is going on unhindered except for some minor hitches.
Well, we are happy with the progress we have seen so far. We expected some initial hitches, but in fact, we are not seeing as many hitches as we thought we were going to have. The situation is much rosier, it’s better.
I commend all our management and the Ministry of Agriculture for what they have been doing so far, which is exactly the way it’s supposed to be,” he said.
This is just as he expressed confidence that with the progress of work on the farm, the state government will be able to harvest twice in one year.
Governor Sule attributed this to the variety of rice that was planted at the Jangwa farm.
“From what you can see and what I have seen myself, we have finished all the planting of this initial area, and we are now going to start clearing a new area. The good news is that in the next couple of months, we will be talking about harvesting because of the type of variety of rice planted here. All these are good news.
“We are planting the best variety of rice here. The one that goes from one hundred days to one hundred and twenty days. So, the earliest time we are expecting of harvesting is towards the end of October. That will be the most ideal target that we have to aim at.
“When we get to that side, again we finish another clearing and harrowing, and then we plant for the second time. This means that we can do two harvests a year. That is really the target for now,” he stated.
The Governor was accompanied on the inspection visit by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Umar Abubakar Dan’akano, the Project Manager, Allanana Emmanuel, Awe Local Government Chairman, Hon. Usman Umar, amongst other top government officials.
