Of course, Governor Abdullahi Sule is trying his best towards tackling the menace of erosion in not only Lafia but Nasarawa as a whole. No doubt his efforts are worth commendations by all. Provisions of road infrastructure in Lafia as well as other towns and cities across the length and breath of Nasarawa state by governor Abdullahi Sule are by no means achievements. And all these are part of efforts towards mitigating the menace of erosion in the state. But in Lafia, for instance, a lot more needs to be done. There are so many erosion-prone areas that the government needs to focus its attention urgently in Lafia, at least to avoid unwanted situations. Erosion no doubt is eating deep into the fabric of some communities in Lafia. For example, residents of the opposite waziri bread along Makurdi road near Massallacin Jumma’a are living in fear of extinction by erosion, anytime it’s reins. There is therefore an urgent need for the government to either reclaim the land or to build retaining structures like walls, terraces, and barriers to hold soil in place and prevent slippage, or through creating drainage to manage water flows and reduce surface runoff. Either way the government decides to go is going to go well with the citizens residing there. On the other hand, this newspaper believes that the government can also regulates construction activities by enforcing regulations to minimize disruption to natural landscapes during building projects. The government also has to conduct public awareness campaigns to educate communities about erosion prevention techniques as well as engage them about sustainable land management and involve them in erosion control.
