NAPHDA Executive Secretary, Dr Iskilu Stresses Importance Of Nutrition At ANRiN Meeting In Abuja

The executive secretary of NAPHDA, Dr. Usman Iskilu Saleh, has stressed the importance of nutrition to the growth and development of the people. Speaking at the opening of a meeting currently being held in Abuja with Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN), Dr. Iskilu observed that nutrition is the foundation of a healthy life as it’s not just about avoiding illness but about thriving and reaching our full potential as human beings. The NAPHDA Executive Secretary maintained that the food we consume provides our bodies with the energy, building blocks, and vital nutrients necessary for every function, from cell growth to brain development, adding that a balanced diet is crucial, which must include a variety of foods from all food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein sources, and dairy. Explaining the importance of each of these sources, Dr. Iskilu said each group offers unique nutrients that contribute to overall well-being. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that protect against disease. Grains provide complex carbohydrates for sustained energy. Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues. Dairy products offer calcium for strong bones and teeth.

While indicating that the benefits of good nutrition are far-reaching, he further noted that nutrition boosts our immune system, making us less susceptible to infections, adding, “It helps in maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancers.”. “Good nutrition also improves mental clarity, energy levels, and mood.”

Dr. Iskilu noted that unfortunately, many of our people don’t consume a balanced diet but rather consume processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of saturated and unhealthy fats, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies, weight gain, and an increased risk of chronic diseases.
While advocating for the consumption of a balanced diet, Dr. Iskilu maintained that making positive changes to our diet is achievable, saying that one can start by incorporating more fruits and vegetables into meals and choosing whole grains over refined grains. Opt for lean protein sources like fish, poultry, and beans. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats.

He stressed that nutrition is a lifelong journey and assured that NAPHDA will do everything possible to make the journey worthwhile in Nasarawa State for people to be healthier and happier.
