By Rayyanu Bala. The country home of Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu in Keffi was abuzz last Thursday as he hosted the leadership of all political parties in Nasarawa State to an iftar gathering. This iftar gathering in Keffi reflects Senator Wadada’s approach to politics, which at best could be described as cosmopolitan politics- devoid of sentiments and primitiveness. Senator Wadada’s politics emphasizes unity and cross-party collaboration. Known for his ability to transcend partisan loyalties, Wadada has built a reputation as a bridge-builder across different political and social divides in Nasarawa State. The keffi gathering aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation among political leaders, aligning with his broader strategy of promoting inclusive leadership and development in Nasarawa State. What was more interesting however in Senator Wadada’s keffi iftar gathering was the presence of virtually the leadership of all known political parties in Nasarawa state, including the ruling APC, the main opposition party, the PDP, and the NNPP, and the PRP among others. Despite the fact that Senator Wadada is from the SDP, but yet the leadership of all the parties made an impressive presence there. But what informed Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu to called for this form of gathering? First, Iftar plays a crucial role in fostering unity during Ramadan by bringing Muslims and non-Muslims together in a shared experience of breaking a fast. This communal meal strengthens and reinforces political party ties by promoting a sense of belonging and togetherness. Secondly, by this iftar gathering, Senator Wadada intends to achieve his age-old belief in inter-party relationships, which is crucial in a democratic setting. Again, the question to ask here is, what are the major takeaways from this KEFFI iftar organized by Senator Wadada for the leadership of all political parties in Nasarawa State?Among the major takeaways from the gathering includes, helping in conflict prevention and resolution since inter-party dialogue serves as vital mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts through fostering open communication and collaboration among parties. This is particularly important in polarized political environments such as ours, where religion and ethnic tensions always take centre stage. The second takeaway is that the iftar gathering makes stable inter-party relationships and enhances democratic quality by facilitating a culture of cooperation and mutual understanding, which is essential for sustainable democracy. The third takeaway from Senator Wadada’s keffi iftar gathering helps in consensus building on critical development and democratic issues by allowing parties to move beyond short-term electoral interests and contribute to long-term democratic stability. By this iftar gathering therefore, Senator Wadada has opened a new vista in the way and manner we play our partisan politics in Nasarawa state. Just as he keeps saying, politics should not and must not be a do-or-die affair. Senator Wadada is indeed a strong advocate of politics without bitterness. He has demonstrated time without numbers how politics should be played in Nasarawa State. We should all look at the capacity and the capability of aspirants as against all other primordial sentiments. What did an aspirant achieve in the past, and what are the possibilities of him repeating or achieving more when given the mandate? These are the questions that should agitate our minds as we approaches 2027.
