As Nigeria celebrates yet another Democracy Day, a symbolic moment honouring the nation’s return to civil rule and the enduring struggle for democratic governance, Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu has issued a stirring message to the nation. In it, he underscores the pivotal role of democracy in Nigeria’s development, while highlighting both his personal journey in public service and his vision for a stronger, more inclusive country.
Representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, Senator Wadada is no stranger to Nigeria’s democratic evolution. With a political career spanning over two decades, he has served at the highest levels of legislative governance, including a notable stint in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2011, where he chaired two key committees: Capital Market and Institutions, and Information and National Orientation. Today, as a Senator and traditional titleholder, the Sarkin Yakin Keffi straddles both modern governance and cultural heritage.
In his Democracy Day message, Senator Wadada reflects deeply on Nigeria’s democratic journey, calling it “the heartbeat of our national aspirations.” For him, democracy is not just a political system, but a symbol of freedom, justice, and collective growth. It is, he notes, the bedrock of national development.
Acknowledging the trials that come with democratic reform, he commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, praising the President’s “bold and strategic initiatives” aimed at transforming Nigeria’s economy and strengthening governance. From infrastructure to education, Tinubu’s policies, he says, “reflect a sincere commitment to repositioning Nigeria on the path of inclusive growth and equity.”
Senator Wadada also reserved special praise for Nasarawa State’s Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, whom he hailed as an embodiment of people-centered leadership. Under Governor Sule’s administration, Nasarawa has become a beacon of peace and progress, a testament to what effective democratic governance can achieve at the subnational level.
Senator Wadada’s track record speaks volumes. As a lawmaker, he was instrumental in reforming Nigeria’s capital market, a move that not only improved investor confidence but also brought greater transparency to the nation’s economic policies. He has also been a consistent advocate for youth development, education, and security in his home state.
Through both public service and personal philanthropy, Senator Wadada has impacted countless lives. Hundreds of young people and women across Nasarawa State have benefited from his empowerment programs, a legacy that goes beyond politics and touches the core of human development.
“As the Sarkin Yakin Keffi, I proudly serve as a bridge between tradition and modern governance,” he notes, emphasizing the importance of cultural leadership in reinforcing democratic values such as dialogue, tolerance, and service.
In his concluding remarks, Senator Wadada called on Nigerians to remain patient and united in their pursuit of national progress. “The journey may be long and often challenging,” he acknowledged, “but with mutual respect, national solidarity, and shared purpose, we can build a Nigeria that truly works for all.”
His message comes at a critical time, as the country navigates a complex web of economic, security, and social challenges. But in Senator Wadada’s words and in his enduring public service there lies a powerful reminder that democracy, while imperfect, remains Nigeria’s most viable path to a just, inclusive, and prosperous future.
