In a move to enhance tax administration across Nigeria, Ahmed Yakubu Mohammed, ACTI, Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Internal Revenue Service (IRS), spearheaded a high-profile delegation of Executive Chairmen from various state Internal Revenue Services on a pivotal courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The delegation’s visit was anchored on the shared vision of fostering stronger collaboration between the Federal Inland Revenue Service and sub-national tax authorities, with the overarching goal of benefiting the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and streamlining tax administration throughout the federation.
Among the distinguished members of the delegation were the Executive Chairmen of Abia, Cross River, Ekiti, Gombe, Zamfara, Plateau, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This diverse representation underscored the collective commitment of states across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones to pursue effective tax governance and harmonized revenue policies.
The Executive Secretary of the Joint Tax Board accompanied the group, serving as secretary for the delegation, symbolizing the integral role of the JTB in coordinating efforts between federal and state tax authorities.
During the visit, the delegation engaged in robust discussions with the FIRS Chairman, exploring innovative strategies to enhance data sharing, operational coordination, and capacity building. This collaborative spirit aims to foster a more unified tax collection framework, reduce revenue leakages, and improve taxpayer compliance across all tiers of government.
Ahmed Yakubu Mohammed emphasized the importance of such partnerships, noting that “strengthening collaboration between federal and state tax bodies is vital to unlocking Nigeria’s full revenue potential and driving sustainable development.”
This visit marks a promising step towards a more integrated and efficient tax system in Nigeria, demonstrating the collective will of tax administrators to work hand-in-hand for national progress. As states and the federal government deepen their collaboration, taxpayers can anticipate improved services, transparency, and accountability within the country’s tax landscape.
The success of this initiative hinges on continued dialogue and shared commitment among all stakeholders, ensuring that the Joint Tax Board’s mandate to harmonize tax administration is fully realized for the benefit of the nation’s economic future.
