Editorial: Why Nasarawa State’s Stance On Political Appointees Is A Step In  Right Direction

In April 2024, the Nasarawa State Government, through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, issued a clear and commendable directive: all political appointees with aspirations for elective office must either resign from their positions or wait for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially lift the ban on political activities. This move, though seemingly procedural, carries with it strong implications for democratic integrity, governance, and public trust. This action deserves widespread support.

At its core, this directive reinforces the basic tenets of democracy: fairness, transparency, and accountability. In Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, the blurring of lines between governance and politicking has often led to compromised service delivery, conflict of interest, and the undue use of state resources for personal political ambition. By drawing a clear boundary, the Nasarawa State Government has demonstrated its commitment to leveling the political playing field.

One of the greatest risks of allowing serving appointees to engage in electoral campaigns is the potential abuse of power and public resources. Appointees often have access to government platforms, influence over procurement decisions, and insider information that can easily be manipulated to serve personal interests. By requiring these individuals to step down if they wish to contest, the government is sending a strong message: public office is not a launchpad for personal political advancement, it is a platform for public service.

This separation ensures that governance continues unhindered and that appointees do not exploit their positions to gain an unfair advantage. It also shields public institutions from being dragged into political controversies, which is essential for maintaining their neutrality and public confidence.

The directive also has a filtering effect, encouraging only those who are genuinely committed to public service and political leadership. Undoubtedly, resigning from a political appointment to pursue elective office is no small decision, it requires sacrifice, conviction, and a clear vision. This ensures that those who enter the race are serious contenders, not opportunists.

The directive aligns with constitutional provisions and electoral guidelines that emphasize the need for neutrality and fairness during the electoral process. INEC regulations and several judicial pronouncements have stressed the importance of political appointees stepping aside well before electioneering begins, to avoid using public office for political gain. Nasarawa’s move reflects a proactive effort to stay ahead of potential legal and ethical pitfalls.

The directive by the Nasarawa State Government is a principled stand in favour of ethical governance and credible elections. It sets a standard not just for the state, but for the nation. As Nigeria continues to build its democratic institutions, actions like this, bold, fair, and rooted in public interest are essential. Other states would do well to follow Nasarawa’s example, putting the health of democracy above short-term political calculations.

By ensuring that political ambition does not compromise the sanctity of public office, Governor Abdullahi Sule has shown leadership. It is a move that will be remembered, not for its political implications, but for its moral clarity.

At this juncture, Nasarawa Eye wish to commend the Accountant General of Nasarawa State, Musa Ahmed Muhammed for debunking his porported political ambitions ahead of 2027 elections.

The Accountant General of Nasarawa State, Musa Ahmed Muhammed, some weeks ago refuted allegations suggesting his involvement in political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While speaking with Journalists in an interview in Lafia, Alhaji Musa Ahmed described the claims as false and baseless. He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the state diligently under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule.

According to him, “I challenge anybody to produce evidence showing me meeting with individuals or groups to declare any intention to contest the governorship of Nasarawa State. At the moment, I am fully committed to the government of Engr. Abdullahi Sule, and that is exactly what I am focused on.”

Kudos to Alhaji Musa Ahmed for openly disassociating himself from efforts by some individuals attempting to draft him into the 2027 governorship race. By distancing himself from such calls, he has demonstrated a commendable sense of responsible leadership.

It is hoped that he will remain true to his words and continue to discharge his duties effectively as the Chief Accounting Officer of the state. Those agitating for his political involvement are urged to respect his appeal and allow him to concentrate fully on his current mandate.
