the approval was confirmed by the COMS-A Executive Committee under the leadership of Prof. Lionel Green-Thompson, President of COMS-A. The consortium was launched in March 2025 at the MedEd Africa Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, hosted by the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). It provides a unified platform for African medical schools to collaborate on solutions to the urgent challenges confronting healthcare education and training.
With this membership, Kaduna State University now joins over 115 medical schools from 34 African countries, united by a shared commitment to advancing high-quality, equitable, and socially accountable medical education for Africa’s population.
Membership in COMS-A places KASU within a continental framework that is dedicated to:
Standardizing and harmonizing medical education across Africa.
Promoting innovation, relevant research, and social accountability.
Building leadership capacity and sustainable professional development pathways.
Strengthening faculty development and fostering inter-institutional partnerships.
Advocating for equity, quality, and greater investment in health education.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, welcomed the development, noting that KASU’s inclusion in COMS-A is a milestone in the university’s efforts to contribute meaningfully to healthcare education and practice.
“This membership opens new opportunities for our faculty and students to engage with peers across the continent. It will enhance our capacity to innovate, collaborate, and strengthen the quality of training we provide for future healthcare professionals,” Professor Musa said.
The Consortium of Medical Schools–Africa (COMS-A) was established to serve as a collaborative platform for African medical schools. Its mission is to transform medical education through shared standards, joint research, leadership development, and partnerships that directly respond to Africa’s health priorities.
