In a move aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s democratic foundations, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada has underscored the importance of strengthening democratic institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking after participating in the screening of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the newly appointed Chairman of INEC, Senator Wadada highlighted the vital role such institutions play in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The screening, held at the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly, was a key national exercise aimed at scrutinizing Professor Amupitan’s qualifications, experience, and vision for Nigeria’s electoral system. As the Chairman of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, Senator Wadada described it as both an honour and a responsibility to contribute to this rigorous process.

“The screening process provided an opportunity to assess Professor Amupitan’s capacity, experience, and vision for sustaining the credibility and independence of Nigeria’s electoral system,” Senator Wadada stated. He stressed that the role of legislators goes beyond confirming appointments; it involves ensuring that those in critical positions demonstrate integrity and competence in serving the Nigerian people.

According to the Senator, “Strengthening democratic institutions like INEC remains central to our collective pursuit of transparency, accountability, and good governance.” His remarks reflect a broader commitment among lawmakers to safeguard the credibility of electoral processes, which is fundamental to deepening Nigeria’s democracy.

Senator Wadada described the deliberations as a privilege, reinforcing the Senate’s dedication to upholding citizens’ trust and enhancing democratic governance in Nigeria.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex political challenges, the emphasis on institutional integrity and accountability remains crucial. The appointment and vetting of Professor Amupitan signal a step towards bolstering the electoral commission’s capacity to manage free and fair elections, a cornerstone of democratic stability.

Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada’s involvement in the screening process highlights his proactive role in national governance, representing the interests of Nasarawa state while advocating for stronger democratic institutions across the country.
