In a show of unity and political maturity, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has assured party members and stakeholders that the upcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in the state will be conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and transparent. He made this statement at a reception held in honour of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada following his return to the APC.
The event, attended by key party stakeholders, was a celebration of Senator Wadada’s return to the party’s fold, marking what many consider a significant moment for the unity of the APC in Nasarawa State.
Governor Sule used the occasion to commend the efforts of the state APC chairman, Dr. Aliyu Bello, and other party executives at various levels for their dedication and behind-the-scenes work in strengthening the party.
“You (Dr. Aliyu Bello) have done so much, and not everybody is going to see what you are doing,” Governor Sule said. “But it is not expected that everybody sees what you are doing. What is expected is that the majority of the more important people to you see what you are doing and commend you. I believe, with all sense of humility, I am one of those people that you require to say thank you. And I say thank you.”
Speaking on the forthcoming primary elections, the governor reiterated his commitment to a democratic process, stressing that he intends to hand over power to a capable successor who is popular among the people and has the electoral strength to win a general election.
“We are going to be fair and just. I want to hand over to a successor who has the capacity to lead the people, who has mass appeal, and who is capable of winning the election,” he stated.
Highlighting the inclusive and democratic spirit of the party, Governor Sule expressed confidence that all aspirants, including Senator Wadada, would support the outcome of a transparent primary.
“There is no doubt that if the primary election of the party is free, fair, and transparent, just like during the 2019 election, even if Senator Wadada loses out, he will support the winner,” he said.
This public assurance is seen by many as a move to douse tensions and build trust among party faithful ahead of the primaries. It also reflects the governor’s strategy to ensure internal cohesion within the party, especially with the return of influential figures like Senator Wadada, who commands significant grassroots support.
