From time to time, statements circulate in the public space tends to test not only our patience but our collective intelligence. The recent press briefing credited to Alhaji Abubakar Usman Sandaji, is one such document. A cocktail of conjecture, half-truths, and melodrama, it tries desperately to turn a routine administrative process into a political inferno. Even more troubling is the reckless attempt to drag the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata, into an issue that neither concerns him nor has been influenced by him. Such mischief deserves a firm, unambiguous response.
Let us establish the most basic fact: the Nasarawa State House of Assembly acted squarely within its constitutional authority. Suspension pending investigation is a standard and lawful safeguard used in every functional democracy to prevent interference and allow facts to be assessed without obstruction. To characterise this as “hasty,” “politically charged,” or “undemocratic” is not only factually bankrupt, it shows a remarkable disregard for how governance actually works. The Assembly did its job—nothing more, nothing less.
Sandaji’s effort to tether this administrative action to the political aspirations of retired IGP Mohammed Adamu Abubakar is a brazen leap of imagination. The suggestion is not supported by logic, evidence, or even basic common sense. Government institutions cannot be reduced to pawns on a political chessboard simply because a statement writer seeks drama. Elevating routine governance to conspiracy is not shallow; it is indeed a mischief.
Perhaps the most offensive portion of Sandaji’s statement is the clumsy attempt to implicate Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata by alleging “complicity” for inviting the acting chairman to an administrative engagement. Let us be unequivocal: Commissioners are required by law and dutyto maintain communication with local government Chairmen for the sake of stability and continuity. Providing administrative guidance does not equate to undermining the legislature. And most importantly, no action taken by the Commissioner has breached protocol, interfered with the Assembly, or advanced any partisan agenda. This accusation against Aminu Muazu Maifata is not merely wrong it is a deliberate fabrication built for political purposes. Hon. Maifata’s reputation for integrity stands far above the reach of such careless propaganda.
Sandaji as self-styled defender of democracy appear far more sensational, his statement substitutes substance for speculation aimed at maligning institutions without evidence, and injects needless tension into the public space. True democratic advocate is grounded in fact, discipline, and responsibility not in contrived alarmism that inflames rather than informs.
Those attempting to weaponise public opinion to force the Governor’s hand should save themselves the effort. Governor Abdullahi Sule has built a reputation for fairness, calm judgment, and unwavering respect for due process. Attempts to derail a legitimate institutional procedure through emotional blackmail or political posturing will fail, because they deserve to fail.
The allegations against Hon. Aminu Muazu Maifata are empty, reckless, and wholly divorced from reality. The State Assembly’s action remains a lawful, legitimate, and procedural step aimed at ensuring accountability. The investigation should proceed without theatrics, distortions, or the meddling of Sandaji’s intent on manufacturing crisis. Nasarawa State is not a stage for political fiction. Its institutions must be allowed to function and they will.
