Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has scheduled a meeting with all All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in the state on Sunday, March 29, in Abuja, immediately after the conclusion of the party’s national convention. The meeting is aimed at fostering unity and reminding aspirants of the spirit of sacrifice that characterized his own emergence as governor in 2019.
Speaking during the traditional Sallah homage paid to him by members of the Nasarawa State Executive Council at his country home in Gudi, Governor Sule said only one aspirant would eventually emerge as the party’s candidate, even though several are qualified and capable. He recalled that 18 aspirants had contested in 2019, but only 11 purchased nomination forms due to their high cost, with five of the remaining seven openly supporting him.
Governor Sule outlined the timeline leading to the governorship primary, noting that from March 30 to April 1, he would attend a security meeting on Northern Nigeria in Kaduna. Activities related to the primary election would commence in earnest once the meeting concluded. He also acknowledged that Good Friday and Easter Monday, falling on April 3 and 6, would briefly pause the schedule before the full weight of primary activities kicks in.
As Chairman of the North Central Governors Forum, the governor announced that Nasarawa State would host the North Central Congresses of the APC, with delegates expected to begin arriving from the same day as the aspirants’ meeting.
During the visit, Governor Sule directed local government workers across the state to be paid their salaries without further delay, expressing disappointment that councils had not disbursed funds before the Sallah holiday despite availability of resources.
Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, who led the Executive Council members, reaffirmed their loyalty to Governor Sule, describing the visit as a demonstration of total allegiance. He further noted the symbolic coincidence of Christians and Muslims beginning their respective fasting periods on the same day this year, emphasizing that the lessons of Ramadan—generosity, abstinence, and empathy for the poor—should extend beyond the fasting period.
