Decoding Gov. Sule’s ‘Most Qualified’ Choice:

By Rayyanu Bala

Governor Abdullahi Sule’s interview on Channels Television on Monday might have sounded like a routine political conversation, but if you watch closely, his choice of words told you a deeper story.
When asked about who could succeed him in the 2027 governorship race in Nasarawa State, Governor Sule didn’t just speak in general terms. Instead, he carefully used two phrases: “highly qualified” and “most qualified.” At first glance, the words may seem interchangeable, but in reality, they carry very different weights.
Saying someone is “highly qualified” is safe and broad. It acknowledges competence, experience, and readiness. It’s the kind of phrase politicians use when they want to recognize multiple contenders without stepping on toes. In essence, it means: this person is good enough—very good, in fact.
But “most qualified”? That’s a different ball game entirely.
“Most qualified” is not just praise—it’s a ranking. It places one individual above all others. It answers the unasked question: if it comes down to a choice, who stands tallest?
So when Governor Sule reportedly referred to Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as the “most qualified,” it didn’t sound accidental. In politics, especially within a party like the All Progressives Congress (APC), words are rarely wasted.
That single phrase may well be the clearest signal yet of where the governor’s preference lies ahead of 2027.
Of course, politics is never that simple. There are always multiple “highly qualified” aspirants—seasoned politicians, technocrats, loyal party figures—all with their own structures and ambitions. By using that inclusive term, the governor keeps the peace and avoids alienating key stakeholders.
But by elevating one person as “the most qualified,” he subtly draws a line in the sand.
To many observers and political watchers in Nasarawa state this could be interpreted as an early endorsement—carefully worded, but unmistakable. It tells APC members: if you’re reading the signs, this is the direction.
Language in politics is never just language—it’s strategy. And in this case, Governor Sule’s distinction between “highly qualified” and “most qualified” may have quietly set the tone for the 2027 governorship contest within the APC.
Whether that direction holds or shifts as the race unfolds remains to be seen. But for now, the message seems clear: among many capable hands, one has been singled out as the most capable.
