Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has reiterated his stance on equity in the state’s political arrangement, insisting that power should rotate to the Nasarawa West Senatorial Zone ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
“I keep insisting, and I stand by that, in line with the spirit of brotherhood, let us take it to Keffi Zone, which has not produced a governor for twenty years,” the governor said while addressing journalists after a high-level stakeholders’ meeting.
The meeting, convened by the governor, brought together governorship aspirants, members of the National Assembly, the deputy governor, and other key political figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. It focused on charting a unified path toward the party’s primaries and the 2027 general election.
Governor Sule disclosed that stakeholders at the meeting overwhelmingly adopted direct primary elections as the mode for selecting candidates for the governorship and other elective positions. According to him, the decision aligns with the position of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has consistently advocated for direct primaries as a means of giving all party members a voice.
He emphasized that the process would be transparent, inclusive, and in strict compliance with the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act, leaving no room for disputes or grievances.
“We have very strong aspirants, many of whom have held or are still holding top positions in the country. They deserve respect, and we must work together to ensure a smooth and credible exercise,” Sule said.
The governor also urged aspirants to accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith, warning that any aggrieved candidate who defects after a credible process would be demonstrating an inability to accept democratic outcomes.
On zoning, Sule clarified that while the term has often been loosely applied, the guiding principle remains fairness and balance among the state’s three senatorial zones. He noted that Nasarawa South had held the governorship for 12 years, while Nasarawa North currently occupies the seat, making it equitable for Nasarawa West to produce the next governor.
He expressed optimism that the APC in Nasarawa State would emerge from the primaries united, stronger, and well-positioned for victory in 2027.
