The lingering crisis within the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC in Nasarawa State is now assuming a new dimension following allegations and counter allegations by the parties in dispute over who presides the affairs of the congress.
Trouble started when the then chairman of the NLC in the state, Comrade Abdullahi Adeka petitioned the national headquarters of the congress after the state Congress election sometimes in April this year.
In his petition, Comrade Adeka alleged that the election was illegal because about thirty people were smuggled into the venue of the election after the screening of all those supposed to vote was concluded.
Speaking to Nasarawa Eye the former chairman said he had protested to the national officer overseeing the election, but it occurred to him that there was a collusion between the national officer and the opposing group, headed by Comrade Yusuf Iya, the person who eventually emerged the winner of the election.
Comrade Adeka explained that when he discovered that his opponent at the poll defeated him with only 10 votes, he petitioned to the NLC national secretariat in Abuja.
Further investigation by Nasarawa Eye revealed that both parties in the dispute have since been summoned to the NLC secretariat in Abuja where they gave their own accounts of what transpired and a committee was set up to look into the lingering crisis.
However, although all the parties have been told to stay action until the resolution of the crisis, there are allegations that Comrade Iya has continued to parade himself as the winner of the botched election.
Investigation by Nasarawa Eye however revealed that the defeated chairman of the council has refused to handover to the newly elected NLC chairman thereby rendering activities of the congress virtually at a standstill.
Some officials at the state NLC House in Lafia testified to Nasarawa Eye that the newly elected chairman in the botched poll, Comrade Yusuf Iya, who is also state chairman, Civil Service Union, has indeed been using the office of the state NLC chairman at the head office in Lafia.
A staff at the state NLC secretariat, who would rather remain anonymous told Nasarawa Eye that there was nothing wrong with the last election, and that the defeated chairman is just afraid of facing the reality because of his past shady deals while still at the helm of affairs.
Meanwhile, Comrade Adeka has debunked all claims, confirming that he has since vacated the office of the state chairman of the NLC, because according to him, he is peace loving and has the full respect of the national leader of the NLC to rule on the final decision.
“Comrade Ayuba Wabba came to Nasarawa State and met the state Governor, he told the Governor that he would be the one to bring the resolution of the crisis and therefore nobody should parade himself as the state chairman, ” Adeka explained further.
However, efforts by Nasarawa Eye to get the response of Comrade Yusuf Iya proved abortive.
