Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, has granted pardon to 15 inmates, as well as paid the fines and compensations of 45 others across the three correctional facilities in the state, as part of activities marking his 60th birthday.
Engineer Sule disclosed this shortly after paying a visit to the Lafia correctional facility on Thursday, where he interacted with the inmates.
The Governor while exercising his prerogative of power, pardoned 15 inmates while also settling the fines and compensations of 45 others.
He directed that those to be freed should cut across the three correctional facilities located in Lafia, Nasarawa and Wamba.
While urging those that will regain their freedom to turn over a new leaf and to become good citizens as they go back into the society, he enjoined the remaining inmates to show remorse by denouncing any criminal tendency.
The Governor equally directed the Nasarawa State Urban Development Board (NUDB) to ensure the provision of portable water and sanitation across all the facilities in the state.
According to Engineer Sule, his administration is extending the same gesture done to public schools in the state by also providing water and sanitation to correctional facilities in the state.
He also urged the local government chairmen of Lafia, Nasarawa and Wamba to look into the possibility of providing solar power across the three correctional facilities.
The Governor announced a donation of food items including rice, beans, palm oil, noodles, a cow, as well as bathing soaps.
He equally donated N500, 000 to be shared among the inmates.
As part of activities lined up to celebrate his 60th birthday, Engineer Sule said he has decided to share the moment with the less privileged in the society.
The Governor equally visited the Lafia Children Home, where he joined his wife, Hajiya Farida A. A. Sule, to mark the day with the orphans in the facility.
Earlier, at his residence at the Government House, the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, led a delegation comprising of members of the state executive council, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), state Chairman and Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), among other top government functionaries, to celebrate with Engineer Sule, supported by the First Lady, Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Sule.
Dr. Akabe described the delegation as a fraction of the Governor’s admirers across the state, who felt there was no need for them to be invited before turning up to celebrate with him.
“And our minds seem to be working together and we found ourselves communicating this morning and one thing brought us together this morning and that is to celebrate a leader, a purposeful leader, a man who is humble, a man who is simple, articulate, visionary, a man who sympathizes with the low and the high,” Dr. Akabe stated.
He said the people of the state considered Engineer Sule as a God given asset and as such they are proud of him and will support him beyond measure as he lead Nasarawa State to the next level of development.
Responding, the celebrant expressed gratitude by the gesture, stressing that life is not really about how much money or power one possesses but how much people one has around him to make him happy.
He said even though his family have made it a tradition to always celebrate his birthday, the gathering of family and friends who came to appreciate him, was the best.
The event witnessed the cutting of a birthday cakes, as well as toasting for the good health of the celebrant.
