Barr M.U Aliyu: The Making Of A New SSG

BY RAYYANU BALA

Barrister Muhammad Ubandoma Aliyu (The Waziri of Lafia) is neither a new entrant in the politics of Nasarawa state nor the affairs of the traditional institution in Lafia and by extension Nasarawa state. The name Barr. M.U Aliyu always comes to mind whenever issues affecting politics and traditional institution are being discussed at the very top level in the state. Though relatively young in age, he is however, great in wisdom and astute in partisan politics, Barr. M. U Aliyu started playing politics when some of our present-day politicians were nowhere near the corridors of politics at both state and federal levels of governance. To be precise, Barr. M.U Aliyu from all accounts is a great disciple of the legend late Senator Haruna Abubakar. To refresh our memory, late Senator Haruna Abubakar served the country meritoriously in various capacities ranging from Managing Director, Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC) – one of the major subsidiaries of the NNPC – to Deputy Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Just as the history of M.U Aliyu would never be complete without mentioning late Haruna Abubakar, so also the history of Late Haruna Abubakar can never be complete without mentioning Barr M. U Aliyu. Barr M.U Aliyu made his foray into partisan politics under the tutelage of late Haruna Abubakar. Late Haruna Abubakar before his demise in 2004 was a great politician who made huge impact in the politics of Second, third, fourth and fifth Republics. As a ‘pupil’ under the tutelage of his mentor the late Haruna Abubakar, Barr M.U Aliyu acquired huge knowledge from him. And it is this knowledge that has made Barr. M.U Aliyu became a phenomenon in the politics of Nasarawa state. Hardly a day passes without his name being mentioned among the close circle of power wielders in Nasarawa state. This has been so right from when the state was created in 1996.
Regarding the traditional institution, Barr. M.U Aliyu being the Wazirin Lafia, is among the top hierarchy in the Lafia Emirate Council. The late Emir of Lafia, Alh. (Dr) Isa Mustapha Agwai 1 bestowed the office of Wazirin Lafia on Barr M. U Aliyu in recognition of his contributions to the development of Lafia and his dexterity in accomplishing tasks assigned to him however herculean such tasks appeared. In fact it was in view of this that Barr. M.U Aliyu endeared himself to the late Emir. So much so that hardly any decision was taken in the Lafia Emirate Council without Barr M.U Aliyu’s deep involvement and contribution during the reign of the late Emir.
I will cite one example to buttress this assertion. When the late Emir of Lafia was conferred with the second highest national honour, ‘Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON)’ during former president Goodlock Jonathan’s administration and when due to some unexplained reasons he was stripped of the award before the conferment ceremony, it was Barr. M.U Aliyu that the late Emir saddled with the responsibility of ‘workings’ to ensure reversal of that decision, to get the award restored to him. And Barr. M.U Aliyu discharged the assignment skillfully and diligently so that in the end, the late Emir of Lafia got his CON award given back and was inaugurated as such .
Even the governor of Nasarawa state, Engineer Abdullahi Sule

acknowledged the nimbleness of Barr. M.U Aliyu when at his swearing-in ceremony as SSG in Government House Lafia on Thursday June 11, 2020, he described him as a ‘political gladiator, grassroots mobilizer, a result- oriented personality and above all, a goal getter’

Barr M.U Aliyu is somebody who commands respect from both the old and the young, the rich and the poor not only in Lafia but the entire state. No wonder when his name was announced as the new SSG in Nasarawa state, the state was wrapped in jubilation especially Lafia, the state capital.
But the question that will readily come to mind here is: who is this Barr. M.U Aliyu? Barr M.U Aliyu was born into a respected, well known family of late Mallam Liman in Kofar Kaura in Lafia, Nasarawa state. After completing his quranic education with a great Islamic scholar, late Mallam Uziru of Kofar Kaura Lafia, Barr. M.U Aliyu was enrolled into Dunama Primary School Lafia. Upon completion, he immediately proceeded to Lafia Community Secondary School Obi (now GSS Obi). After completing his secondary education he gained admission to read B.Sc. Geography at the prestigious University of Maiduguri, Borno state where he graduated in 1986. He did his one year compulsory service in Bauchi. Not satisfied with his accomplishments, he enrolled into the University of Jos to read Law. He become a fully fledged Barrister of Law in 1997 after completing his law school programme in Bwari Abuja. Thereafter, he joined the Law firm of Doka Chambers Lafia as partner. From there he ventured into full-time politics, contested and won election of Lafia Local Government Council Chairmanship position. His three years sojourn as Executive Chairman, Lafia Local Government (1999-2002) was meritorious.
It was during his time as Executive Chairman, that Lafia people started to feel the impact of government. Within the three years of his tenure as Chairman, Barr M.U Aliyu ensured the construction of drainages in all the 13 wards of Lafia Local Government Council, in addition to construction/renovation of all LGEA Schools and all PHC centers within the Local Government. The befitting Lafia Local Government Secretariat along Makurdi road,Lafia was among his legacies when he held sway as Chairman, Lafia Local Government Council.
After his tenure as Chairman, Barr. M.U Aliyu returned to his legal practice as principal partner M.U Aliyu chambers, Lafia and also continued pursuing his business of partisan politicking. He served in campaign organizations of late governor Aliyu Akwe Doma in 2011 and Engineer A.A Sule’s in 2019.
Of course, the appointment of Barr. M.U Aliyu as SSG by Governor Abdullahi Sule did only come at the right time but it will go a long way in strengthening the machinery of government to enhance effective and efficient service delivery. Indeed, the government and people of Nasarawa state would surely find in Barr. M.U Aliyu an embodiment of sacrifice and service.
