Amidst growing concern on which zone should take the shot at the presidency of this country after expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023, the Nasarawa state APC Secretary Hon. Aliyu Bello has strongly advocated for the shifting of the presidency to the South- West.
Speaking with Nasarawa Eye in an exclusive interview in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital, Hon. Bello reasoned that since South West is the only support base of the APC in the entire Southern region, the slot should go to it if the APC is to be fair to the zone.
While describing those calling for the retention of the presidency in the North as self centered, Hon. Bello stressed that in the interest of peace, the South West should be allowed to take the shot, adding that anything contrary to this would not augur well for the polity. Hon. Bello acknowledged that politics is a game of numbers but said that it is not only votes that matters as certain considerations must come to play too. “In our own case in Nigeria our politics is still fragile, it is not as advanced as that of the western countries”, he added.
He further observed: “Our politicians are not advanced and cosmopolitan as those of advanced countries; once you try to show that you have the numbers then the issue of religion, ethnicity, zone or region will sadly come in”.
On who the South West should put forward if the presidency is zoned to it, Hon. Bello said the South West has no other politician worthy of note and who sacrifices much for the APC than the Jagaba of Borgu, Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
While describing Tinubu as pillar of politics of present- day Nigeria, Hon. Bello stressed that since 1999, Ahmed Bola Tinubu has remained constant, saying that Tinubu has never shifted base away from the progressives.
While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for his doggedness towards getting solutions to Nigeria’s myriad of problems, the State APC secretary also lauded the way and manner Governor Abdullahi A. Sule is running the affairs of Nasarawa state in line with international best practices and appealed to Nigerians and the people of Nasarawa state in particular to continue to give the government of Buhari and Sule all the needed support to be able to move the country and Nasarawa state to the next level of development.
He commended Senator Umaru Tanko Al-makura who represents Nasarawa south district, for the great efforts he made in developing Nasarawa state when he held sway as governor for eight years.
