Amina Zubairu Acquittance: NSSG To Study Judgement- Justice Comm

Anthony AdgidziThe woman who killed her husband over attempt to marry a second wife, according to Islamic injunction, Amina Zubairu has been acquitted by an Appeal Court sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State Capital.Amina, aged 35 years, was the wife of the late Gom-Mama of Kwarra Chiefdom in Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.She was alleged to have poisoned her husband, Adamu Zubairu, with a substance through a syringe, as a way of expressing her unhappiness over Zubairu’s decision to marry another wife.Zubairu, until his death in February 15, 2014, at the eve of the wedding fatiha, he was a first class traditional ruler in the state.According to Islamic Injunction, marrying more than one wife is permissible, a knowledge which every Muslim woman is aware of.Justice Aisha Bashir, the present Chief Judge of Nasarawa State, who presided over the case then, declared the victim death by hanging for killing her husband.She held that the accused was found guilty of culpable homicide, which carries the death penalty.The judge who cited relevant constitutional Provisions noted that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, and subsequently sentenced the convict to death by hanging.The woman then went to the Court of Appeal in Makurdi to further review the judgment of the Nasarawa State High Court and to as well determine her faith.This comes two years after the appellant was sentenced to death by the state high courtThe matter which was presided by Justice Jambo Afako has quashed a case involving Hajia Amina Zubairu and Nasarawa State Government and acquits her of the charges against her.Afako, in a ruling said, the case which was alleged that Amina murdered her husband in 2014 by injecting the deceased with some substance that led to his death lack evidence of truth, and has justice miscarriage, and cannot be entertained in the appeallant court.She therefore set aside the judgment delivered on the 11th December,2018 by the lower court convicting the appeallant to death sentenced as bias, and quashed the sentenced in favour of the appeallant, Amina Zubairu.Reacting shortly after the judgment, counsel to Amina Zubairu, Shikammah Kassam Sheltu thanked the judge for the ruling and speedy dispensation of justice, saying his client will be relieved from the conviction following the decision of the court.Also commenting after the ruling, Counsel to Nasarawa State Government, Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana admitted that there was an industry of hardwork and deligent in the judgment, he however said in a senario where life was lost, there is no better direction for justice.He said, his team will wait for the hard copies of the judgment to be served to them, after which it will be studied and know the next direction to be taken.Meanwhile, the Nasarawa State High Court has commenced hearing on the case against Ahmadu Yaro, the suspect who was alleged to have raped a three months old baby in Adogi village in Lafia Local government area.The matter which was mentioned in court, got stalk when the counsel to the defendant, the legal aid council failed to appear in the court.The case which was before Justice Aisha Bashir of High Court I, however fixed 18 March for taking of plea in continuation of the hearing.
