Nasarawa Youths Warn Against Ethnic Politics, Slam Rival Forum Over “Divisive” Claims

The Concerned Nasarawa State Ethnic Youths Group has warned against what it described as the dangerous use of ethnic narratives in political discourse, cautioning that such rhetoric could deepen divisions and threaten peace in the state.
In a press statement signed by its coordinator, Comr. Ibrahim Thaddeus Maiyanga, the group rejected calls for an “indigenous” governorship candidate, noting that Nasarawa State is home to diverse ethnic groups—including Eggon, Alago, Gwandara, Mada, Migili, Tiv, Hausa, and Fulani—each indigenous to different parts of the state. It stressed that no single group holds a monopoly over indigeneity.
The group also pushed back against what it described as “misleading and divisive claims” by a rival body, the Forum of National Youth Presidents of Ethnic Nationalities, Nasarawa State Chapter, accusing it of spreading falsehoods and misrepresenting political realities in a manner capable of inciting unrest.
“No group has the right to intimidate others or preemptively reject the outcome of a democratic process,” the statement said, while condemning alleged threats by the forum to mobilize against certain candidates. It described such remarks as veiled intimidation and warned they could trigger political instability.
Addressing allegations that Abdullahi Sule had imposed a governorship candidate, the group dismissed the claim as unfounded. It clarified that the governor merely exercised his constitutional right to express a personal preference, insisting that no aspirant has been barred from contesting and that the primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would be free and transparent.
On the issue of zoning, the group maintained that it remains a legitimate political tool for promoting fairness and inclusivity. It argued that zoning is not prohibited by Nigeria’s constitution and has been successfully adopted in several states to ensure balanced representation, adding that dismissing it outright undermines the aspirations of regions such as Nasarawa West.
Reaffirming its position, the group declared its loyalty to Nasarawa State and the APC, crediting the party’s leadership under Governor Sule and former governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for providing stability and governance.
The statement concluded with a call for restraint among political actors, urging aspirants, party leaders, and community stakeholders to prioritize peace and unity over political ambition. It emphasized that while elections are temporary, the long-term stability and development of Nasarawa State must remain paramount.
