Residents of Unguwar Gayam yesterday embarked on a community-wide clean-up exercise aimed at clearing debris left on the street following the burning of brooms by supporters of former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.
The exercise, led by Hon. Ilele Gayam and Alhaji Nagode Maidoya, attracted residents and supporters of Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Nasarawa State. Organizers described the initiative as a demonstration of their commitment to peace, cleanliness, and responsible political engagement.
The clean-up exercise followed the burning of brooms in the area by supporters of Adamu as a symbolic rejection of the APC. The action has generated political debate in recent weeks, with observers expressing concern over the growing use of symbolic protests in the state’s political landscape.
Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of the APC in Nasarawa State, Dr. Aliyu Bello, urged party supporters to remain law-abiding and avoid actions that could lead to confrontation or unrest.
He emphasized the need for peaceful political participation, noting that differences in political opinion should not undermine public order or community harmony.
Speakers at the event also stressed the importance of focusing on practical issues rather than engaging in symbolic acts such as the burning of brooms. Some pointed out that despite the destruction of the brooms, they remain essential tools for maintaining cleanliness in homes and communities, including the homes of those who burned them. They challenged those involved in the act, saying that if they considered brooms unworthy enough to burn, they should refrain from using them in the future.
Residents who participated in the exercise said the initiative demonstrated that communities can respond to political tensions through constructive and peaceful actions. They expressed hope that political actors and supporters across party lines would prioritize unity, mutual respect, and community development.
The clean-up exercise concluded with calls for continued peaceful coexistence and civic responsibility. Speakers urged residents to work together for the progress and well-being of Unguwar Gayam and Nasarawa State as a whole.
