On Friday, Dr. Aliyu Bello, the Chairman of the APC in Nasarawa State, left Lafia to attend the APC State Chairmen’s Forum meeting in Lagos. The meeting, which will run until Monday, is being hosted by the Lagos State Government and is aimed at facilitating peer reviews of the activities and performance of the party’s various state chapters.
Against this backdrop, it is important to take a closer look at the man who heads the secretariat of this forum. That man is none other than Dr. Aliyu Bello.
Much has been said about him by both friends and critics. However, one quality that cannot be taken away from Dr. Bello is his mastery of party politics. He is widely regarded as a master strategist who understands the dynamics of political organisation and leadership. His experience, political acumen, and strategic approach have earned him respect within and beyond the party.
Sometimes, appointments and elections within political circles tell a story that goes far beyond the titles attached to them. That is exactly what happened at the Forum of APC State Chairmen meeting held some time ago in Abuja, where the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, Dr. Aliyu Bello, was not only present but was also entrusted with the important responsibility of serving as the Acting Secretary of the APC State Chairmen’s Forum.
Dr. Aliyu Bello’s nomination is indeed in recognition earned through competence, experience, and a demonstrated understanding of political party administration.
Those who still harbour doubts should understand that managing a ruling political party at the state level is no simple task. It requires balancing competing interests, maintaining discipline, strengthening party structures, resolving internal disagreements, and ensuring that the party remains connected to its grassroots supporters. Anyone who has followed Dr. Bello’s leadership in Nasarawa State would agree that he has consistently demonstrated these qualities.
It is, therefore, not surprising that his colleagues from across the country found him worthy of serving as Secretary of such an influential forum.
Today, the APC is not just another political party. It controls the Presidency and governs most of the states in the federation, making the Forum of APC State Chairmen one of the most strategic organs within the party’s internal structure. Decisions and recommendations emerging from the forum have far-reaching implications for party administration, membership expansion, grassroots mobilisation, and electoral preparedness across Nigeria.
That makes the position of Secretary especially significant.
The Secretary is expected to keep the forum organised, coordinate its activities, document critical resolutions, and ensure effective communication among state chairmen and between the forum and the National Working Committee. It is a role that demands attention to detail, administrative discipline, and the confidence of colleagues from every part of the country.
Dr. Bello’s election to that office reflects the trust his fellow state chairmen have placed in his judgement and administrative abilities.
The Lagos meeting, which he is attending, focuses on reviewing the party’s performance, strengthening internal cohesion, expanding membership, and aligning state chapters with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. These are issues that require experienced political managers who understand both policy formulation and grassroots politics.
For Nasarawa State, Dr. Bello’s emergence is also a source of pride. It means the state now has a stronger voice in one of the APC’s most important coordinating platforms. More importantly, it places additional responsibility on its chairman to contribute to shaping policies and strategies that will influence the party nationwide.
In politics, respect from one’s peers is often the strongest endorsement anyone can receive. Elections by colleagues are rarely accidental; they are usually based on confidence built over time. Dr. Aliyu Bello’s emergence as Secretary of the APC State Chairmen’s Forum appears to be one such case, a recognition of administrative competence, political maturity, and leadership capacity.
As the APC continues to consolidate its position as Nigeria’s dominant political party, the effectiveness of forums such as this will become even more important. Having experienced hands like Dr. Bello occupying key positions can strengthen the coordination needed to keep the party united, responsive, and prepared for the challenges ahead.
