As political discussions about the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State continue to gather momentum, with Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu emerging as a leading contender, one point that deserves Governor Sule’s careful consideration is that no one in the state has a greater stake in Wadada’s success than Governor Sule himself.
Politics, all over the world, is not just about winning elections but it is also about preserving a vision. Every leader who is genuinely committed to development hopes to leave behind a worthy successor, someone who will protect the gains already made and build upon them rather than abandon them. Certainly that is the way lasting legacies are created.
Governor Abdullahi Sule has identified Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu as the person capable of preserving his legacy and has publicly presented him as his preferred successor. Therefore, this declaration is a significant political statement, suggesting that the governor believes Wadada possesses the qualities required to lead Nasarawa State after his tenure. It also reflects his conviction that Wadada shares his vision for the state’s development, has the competence to govern, and is committed to serving the people of Nasarawa State diligently.
Since Governor Sule has expressed such confidence in Senator Wadada, it naturally follows that he bears more responsibility than anyone else to ensure that this conviction becomes a reality in 2027.
Every political leader who identifies a preferred successor is expected to invest time, resources, political capital, and strategic effort to give that successor the best possible chance of winning the election.
For Governor Sule, the stakes are especially high. The outcome of the next election will, to a large extent, determine how his administration is remembered. A successor who shares his development agenda is more likely to consolidate ongoing projects, sustain policy direction, and preserve the progress achieved during his years in office.
On the other hand, if leadership passes to someone from the opposition, someone with a completely different agenda, many of governor Sule’s policies and projects could be reviewed, altered, or even abandoned. This explains why Governor Sule’s interest in the 2027 election must go beyond ordinary.
As things stand and without no pretensions, there are some individuals within the APC fold who are determined to ensure that Governor Sule’s vision of Senator Wadada succeeding him does not materialise.
Ultimately, the people of Nasarawa State will decide who becomes the next governor. However, from a political standpoint, it is reasonable to argue that Governor Abdullahi Sule has the greatest personal and political investment in the success of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada. If he truly believes that Wadada is the right person to continue his vision for the state, then he must remain one of the strongest advocates for that transition.
Indeed, political legacies are measured not only by what leaders accomplish while in office but also by whether their achievements endure after they leave office. It is against this background that the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State represents more than a contest for political power; it is a contest over continuity, stability, and the future direction of the state.
As Nelson Mandela once said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others.” For any leader, that difference is measured not only by achievements while in office but also by whether those achievements endure through capable and visionary successor. Since Governor Abdullahi Sule believes Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu is the right person to sustain his development agenda, then, supporting his emergence has become a matter of great personal and political importance.
