By Our Reporter The vice chairman of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC), in the north central zone, comprising of Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, Niger and Kwara states as well as the federal capital territory, Abuja, Alhaji Suleiman Wambai, has revealed how the party countered senate president, Bukola Saraki and his allies’ plot against President Mohammadu Buhari and the party.
In an exclusive interview in Lafia, Wambai said that members of the party’s National Working Committee of which he is a member and the chairman, Adams Oshiomhole had to work extra hard throughout the period as well as travel to several states and countries to mitigate their plans. He said that because of the counter-move by the party’s hierarchy, the senate president and his group could not muster the 36 senators they had originally penciled down to defect to the PDP. According to the APC vice chairman, their aim was to impeach President Buhari with their additional numerical strength, “bring the APC down” and get somebody who would do their bidding which he described as a conservative agenda, tp take over the country’s leadership before calling for fresh elections.
He disclosed, “The intention of Bukola Saraki and his disciples was to have about 36 senators defect to the PDP. That is why the APC National Working Committee under the leadership of Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, we worked throughout the night, to mitigate it. At the end of the day they got only about 15 senators. Their motive was to destroy the APC and impeach Mr. President because Mr. President is a cog in their wheel.
“Their plan was: ‘let us get these 36 senators to defect to PDP, and then we set up the machinery to impeach Mr. President and bring whoever will do our bidding’. In fact they wanted to impeach the president, vice president, so that Bukola can mount the saddle of leadership for a while, then they will go for election, fresh election. Unfortunately for them it was not possible for them because we worked throughout the period, trying to neutralize it. I travelled to more than 20 states by virtue of my being a member of the National Working Committee and Adams Oshiomhole had to go to about six countries, US, UK,, Turkey, etc., to explain what is happening to our members in the diaspora and the governments”
On the defection of notable politicians in the zone, namely the senate president, Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State and Samuel Ortom of Benue State and others, from the APC, Wambai explained that they opted out because they could not fit into the progressive ideology of the party
Said he, “We did all we could to stop them (because we are not happy at seeing some people leaving our party) to see how we could change their conservative ideology to a progressive ideology but they cannot change and the best option for them is to check out. Nobody will force anybody to stay in a party where he does not like to stay; it is a free world after all. But then, Samuel Ortom, Abdulfatah and senate president cannot fit into the progressive agenda. After so many attempts to
see how they can change the progressive idea to their conservative way of doing things, it was not possible, so the best thing for them was to move out of the party so they can go back to their PDP or form another conservative party”.
