News filtering out from various Local Governments and Development Areas in Nasarawa state indicates that as at today workers at all the Local Government Councils and all Development Areas have received their January salary. Hitherto there was an anxiety and apprehension over not only non payment of January salary but fear and apprehension over screening of local government workers. All these put together constituted much bigger concerned to all lovers of democracy and those desires to see to the success of APC in Nasarawa state in the forthcoming general elections, Before now, we were told that already there was a directives for yet another screening exercise for workers of Local Government Councils and Development Areas. And Information available to Nasarawa Eye revealed that already all DFA’s of all the Local Government Councils and Development Areas have complied to the directives by forwarding all payment vouchers (PV) of workers in the pay rolls of their respective Local Government Councils and Development Areas for purpose of screening. However the intervention of Gov. Al-makura has saved the untoward situations which the non-payment of January salary and the proposed screening exercise might have brought to fore. For avoidance of doubt, we in Nasarawa Eye are not in anyway against screening of workers of Local Governments and Development Areas, as we believe there are still some hanky panky in the system of payment of local government workers that needed to be uncovered at least to sanitized and do away with the rots once and for all, but the timing of non payment of January salaries and the screening exercise was not only faulty, wrong but inappropriate considering the fact that we have only one week away from the Presidential and National Assembly elections. Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura is aspiring for the Senate seat, his party the APC is in ballot for all the elections in the state thus, to do something that can cast the APC in bad light at this crucial time is not only dangerous but suicidal. None payment of January salaries of Local Government workers and the screen exercise if not halted by the governor might cast the APC in the state in bad light and that could make the local government workers turn their backs against the party. At this time that elections are around the corner, things that could make people avoid APC in the elections must be avoided. We in Nasarawa Eye, shares the opinion being express in some quarters that there are some fifth columnists who are working assiduously but clandestinely to Sabotage the efforts of APC government in Nasarawa or else why nursing the idea of screening of workers barely one week away to the elections? Governor Al-makura was right in halting the screening and in directing for immediate payment of the salaries. As a leader of the party in the state, Al-makura must focussed his attention and be conversant always with happenings in the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, it appears there are some people that don’t want him ( Al-makura) and his party to succeed in this forthcoming elections. Whatever that is there to look at regarding salaries of Local Government Coucils must wait until after elections. We appreciate the concern of Governor Al-makura for directing that henceforth, payment of salaries of local government workers should be paid in full, just as we are also glad that this directive were been implemented to the later, drops in allocation from the federation accounts not withstanding. Indeed, Just as we observed elsewhere here, the screening should wait until after the elections. Success of the APC must be of paramount importance. APC success must supersede all other considerations. This is not the time to underestimate the capability and the strength of any individual or group.
