The non- payment of June salary of workers of Local government
councils in Nasarawa state has stirred the hornet’s nest on the
quantum of graft being perpetrated in the Nasarawa state Ministry for
Local Government forcing the state House of Assembly to constitute a
panel to probe what causes the delay in payment of this June salary.
It would be recalled that when the immediate past commissioner for
Local Government Haruna Osegba assumed office he disclosed that Local
Government joint accounts in Nasarawa state has resolved to probe the
activities of state ministries and agencies connected to local
government joint accounts disbursements in the state, following
massive frauds said to have being perpetrated in the remittance from
local government joint accounts to the State Universal Basic Education
Board (SUBEB), Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) and
the Pension Bureau.
Mr Osegba attributed percentage payment of local government workers in
Nasarawa state to shoddy deals, stating that funds were pumped to
these MDAs without proper accountability. The then Commissioner
therefore directed Local Government Audit to commence immediate
investigations into the matter.
But since then, nothing has been heard about the investigations.
Whether the Local Government Audit actually carried out the
investigations or not remains in the realms of conjunctures. And Mr
Osegba who first let the cat out of the bag has not said anything
regarding the graft in the said disbursements up till the time he
bowed out of office at the end of Al-makura administration.
We in Nasarawa Eye however believe there were well entrenched scam in
the disbursements of funds to these MDA’s which only independent body
can competently conduct such a probe.
While we welcome the constitution of the investigative panel by the
state House of Assembly headed by Member representing Lafia East Hon
Muhammad Alkali which according to media reports the panel has already
made some mouth watering discovering, we however inclined to believe
as untrue, the claimed that the total Local Government councils staff
salaries alone stands at N2.2 billion monthly. This figure is highly
inflated. We also believe strongly that monthly disbursements to
MDA’s in questions were being padded.
Just as the speaker of the state House of Assembly assured for a
through job to bring to an end lingering crisis associated with
monthly payment of salaries of workers at local government level in
the state, we in Nasarawa Eye like to recommend for severe measures
against all those enmesh in all the despicable transactions which
resulted to this present predicament.
