In politics, leadership is ultimately judged not by rhetoric but by the wisdom of decisions taken at critical moments. When a leader rises above narrow interests to protect fairness, stability and the future of the people, such decisions transcend personal ambition and become acts of statesmanship.
The recent engagements by His Excellency, Governor Abdullahi Alhaji Sule, with governorship aspirants across the three zones of Nasarawa State, first in Abuja and subsequently in Lafia, clearly reflect this kind of leadership. While the Abuja meetings focused on reaffirming the principle of rotation of the governorship among the zones, the Lafia meeting with Western Zone aspirants was more definitive, as the Governor openly indicated his support for Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada (Sarkin Yakin Keffi, Dandangin Lafia and Chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee) ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
This decision is not arbitrary. It is rooted in political consistency and respect for the zoning arrangement that has helped sustain balance, inclusiveness and stability in Nasarawa State. Governor Sule himself emerged within this framework and his insistence on maintaining it underscores a commitment to fairness and continuity in the state’s political evolution.
Zoning, in this context, is not merely a political slogan; it is a stabilizing mechanism in a plural society. Abandoning it at this stage could reopen avoidable tensions and disrupt the relative harmony the state currently enjoys. By upholding this principle, the Governor has once again demonstrated that leadership must be guided by long-term considerations rather than short-term political expediency.
Within this framework, the emergence of Senator Wadada represents a logical and balanced progression. Over the years, he has built a reputation for experience, grassroots engagement and policy-oriented leadership. His public service record and broad acceptability across the state position him as a credible figure capable of consolidating existing gains while charting new directions.
Importantly, Senator Wadada’s development philosophy, captured in the HEARTS Agenda (Human Capital Development, Economic Enhancement, Accountability, Rural Transformation, Technological Advancement and Security), aligns closely with the developmental trajectory established by the A. A. Sule administration. This suggests continuity without stagnation and innovation without unnecessary disruption.
It is important to emphasize that the Governor’s decision did not emerge in isolation or without consultation. Rather, it was the outcome of a series of deliberate and inclusive engagements with aspirants across the three zones of Nasarawa State. These consultations, first at the broader level and later within specific zones, provided a platform for dialogue, reassurance and the careful management of expectations. Such an approach reflects not only political maturity but also a deep commitment to preserving unity within the party.
Throughout this process, the Governor demonstrated sensitivity to the aspirations of all contestants, recognizing that each aspirant represents a constituency of supporters, ideas and contributions to the growth of the APC. The effort to carry everyone along, even in the face of an inevitable decision, is itself a testament to responsible leadership. Now that the direction has been made clear, the next phase becomes even more critical.
At this stage, the responsibility shifts to Senator Wadada and his supporters to consolidate this process of engagement. Political leadership at this level requires inclusiveness, humility and bridge-building. It is essential that all aspirants and their supporters are treated with respect, dignity and a genuine sense of belonging. Extending a hand of fellowship is not merely a political necessity, it is a moral obligation that strengthens trust and fosters lasting unity.
Equally, the other aspirants within the APC deserve profound commendation.
Their willingness to step forward to serve, their investments in grassroots mobilization and their contributions to strengthening the party structure are invaluable. These are leaders who have demonstrated capacity, commitment and a genuine desire to move Nasarawa State forward. Their roles in shaping the political landscape of the state cannot and should not be diminished by the outcome of this phase of the process.
Indeed, every serious aspirant brings something unique to the table, be it experience, vision, networks, or grassroots connection. These assets remain vital to the collective strength of the APC. The party’s future success will depend not on the emergence of a single candidate alone, but on how effectively it harnesses the collective energy and goodwill of all its leaders.
Accepting the Governor’s decision in good faith, therefore, should not be seen as a loss, but as a strategic investment in the party’s long-term stability. Political relevance is not defined solely by immediate outcomes; it is sustained through consistency, loyalty and constructive engagement. Those who demonstrate these qualities today often find themselves better positioned for greater responsibilities in the future. That’s exactly what Senator Wadada is benefitting from today.
Politics, after all, is not a short-distance race but a continuous journey. Moments like this call for statesmanship, patience and a broader perspective. By rallying behind a common objective now, all aspirants contribute to strengthening party cohesion, enhancing electoral prospects and safeguarding the developmental trajectory of Nasarawa State.
The role of party leadership also remains critical. With a structured and stable party system, strong grassroots presence and coordinated leadership, the APC in Nasarawa State appears well positioned as the state moves closer to the 2027 elections.
While opposition parties may interpret recent developments through partisan lenses, the broader reality is that political strength is built on organization, unity and a clear development agenda. The alignment between the current administration’s achievements and Senator Wadada’s forward-looking vision presents a compelling proposition for continuity and progress.
In conclusion, Governor Sule’s position is more than a political endorsement, it is a strategic effort to preserve zoning, sustain development and maintain unity. As the 2027 governorship election approaches, the emphasis should remain on inclusiveness, dialogue and collective responsibility.
The task ahead is not just about choosing a candidate, but about strengthening the foundations of governance and ensuring that Nasarawa State continues on a path of stability and development.
In the final analysis, unity is the greatest asset any political party can possess. When leaders choose collaboration over division and collective progress over individual ambition, the benefits extend far beyond party lines, they ultimately serve the people of Nasarawa State.
Congratulations to Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada and the APC family
