There are birthdays, and then there are milestones each can invite reflection on a life that has touched countless people and shaped communities. The celebration of the 70th birthday of His Royal Highness, Justice Sidi Muhammad Bage, JSC (Rtd), the Emir of Lafia, alongside his seventh anniversary on the throne, is undoubtedly one of those rare occasions.
For many Nigerians, Justice Bage’s story is one that commands respect. Before becoming the Emir of Lafia, he built an outstanding career in the judiciary, rising to become a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. His years on the bench earned him a reputation for integrity, fairness, and dedication to justice. These qualities did not disappear when he exchanged the courtroom for the palace; instead, they have become defining features of his leadership as a traditional ruler.
In my view, what makes this double celebration particularly significant is the seamless way he has combined the wisdom of a jurist with the responsibilities of a royal father. Since ascending the throne seven years ago, Emir Bage has demonstrated that traditional institutions remain relevant when guided by vision, inclusiveness, and a genuine concern for the people.
His reign has coincided with efforts to strengthen peace, preserve cultural values, and promote development across the Lafia Emirate. At a time when many communities face social and economic challenges, his emphasis on unity and harmonious coexistence has provided a stabilizing influence. The Emir’s ability to engage people from different backgrounds while maintaining the dignity and traditions of the emirate deserves commendation. Looking at the progress recorded under his stewardship, it is clear that Emir Bage has embraced leadership as a service rather than a privilege. His accessibility, fatherly guidance, and commitment to the welfare of his people have earned him admiration far beyond the boundaries of Lafia.
The symbolism of celebrating 70 years of life and seven years on the throne is also worth noting. One represents a lifetime of experience, achievement, and service; the other reflects a period of purposeful royal stewardship. Together, they tell the story of a man whose journey has been marked by responsibility, discipline, and an enduring commitment to the common good.
As family members, subjects, friends, and well-wishers gather to celebrate this historic occasion tomorrow June 22, 2026, there is every reason to appreciate the legacy that His Royal Highness continues to build. His life reminds us that true leadership is rooted in character, wisdom, and a sincere desire to uplift others.
Justice Sidi Bage possesses a remarkable character that can best be described as exceptional and unmatched, especially among many of his contemporaries.
Growing up in Lafia in the 1970s, I came to know Justice Sidi Bage through my elder brother, Sirajo Bala, who happened to be his bosom friend. Their friendship began at Dunama Primary School, Lafia, and continued through their years at Government Secondary School, Lafia. I know Emir Bage since that time as a man of integrity, humility, and deep faith. He paid little attention to worldly possessions or material pursuits, choosing instead to live a life guided by principle, discipline, and service to others.
He is a God-fearing individual who has consistently demonstrated honesty, sincerity, and straightforwardness in both his public and private life. These qualities have earned him the respect and admiration of those who have had the privilege of knowing him closely. His life remains a shining example of selflessness, moral uprightness, and dedicated leadership.
On this remarkable milestone, I join countless admirers in celebrating a distinguished jurist, a respected monarch, and a symbol of service. May Almighty Allah continue to bless His Royal Highness, Justice Sidi Muhammad Bage, JSC (Rtd), with good health, wisdom, and strength as he continues to guide the Lafia Emirate toward even greater peace, unity, and progress.
Happy 70th Birthday and congratulations on seven impactful years on the throne.
