Kashim Shettima’s Compliments on Engr. Sule and Senator Wadada

At the grand commissioning of the Diamond New Energy Lithium Plant in Endo, Nasarawa State, yesterday, Vice President Kashim Shettima made complimentary remarks about Governor Engr. Abdullahi Sule and Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, comments that were received with excitement by many.
The Vice President’s remarks came as no surprise to those who have closely followed the leadership styles of the two distinguished leaders. He simply stated what many already know. Governor Engr. Abdullahi Sule has managed the affairs of Nasarawa State with remarkable patience, humility, and decorum. Since assuming office in 2019, he has consistently demonstrated simplicity and a calm approach to governance, qualities that some have mistakenly interpreted as signs of weakness.
Similarly, Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu is widely known for his patience, humility, and respect for people from all walks of life, regardless of their age, religion, or social status. His courteous and inclusive approach has earned him admiration not only across Nasarawa State but throughout the country.
While praising Governor Abdullahi Sule for his calm temperament and his ability to endure criticism without retaliation, Vice President Shettima drew a sharp contrast with Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu. According to the Vice President, Governor Sule possesses remarkable patience, choosing to “turn the other cheek” even when provoked. Senator Wadada, he said, is also patient, but in a different way. If pushed too far, Wadada is the kind of leader who responds with equal force.
In simple terms, the Vice President suggested that while Governor Sule may tolerate repeated provocations before reacting, Wadada is not someone who will allow himself to be intimidated or bullied. The Hausa expression used to describe the difference paints a vivid picture: Governor Sule may quietly endure, but Wadada will immediately stand up and confront any challenge head-on.
Because this description came from the Vice President himself, many accepted it as an accurate assessment. Indeed, after making the comparison, Shettima emphasized that his description of both Governor Sule and Senator Wadada was based on facts.
By highlighting Wadada’s energy, courage, and resilience, the Vice President also presented him as someone capable of sustaining the development agenda of Governor Abdullahi Sule, albeit with a more assertive leadership style.
Whether one agrees with the Vice President’s assessment or not, it is evident that leadership comes in different forms. Some leaders believe restraint is the greatest strength, while others believe firmness commands respect. Both approaches have their advantages. Patience can promote peace and stability, but excessive tolerance may sometimes be mistaken for weakness. At the same time, a leader must be firm and decisive when necessary. He must project strength and demonstrate the courage to make difficult decisions in the pursuit of good governance.
As the political landscape in Nasarawa gradually begins to take shape ahead of the next governorship election, comments such as those made by the Vice President will continue to fuel debate. Was he simply paying tribute to two leaders with different personalities, or was he subtly sending a message about the future of Nasarawa State?
Only time will provide the answer. For now, however, Shettima’s remarks can be seen as his assessment of two leaders with distinct leadership styles. A leader must possess not only patience but also the ability to take firm action whenever it is required to advance good governance, just as many influential philosophers and political thinkers have argued.
They argued that effective leadership requires firmness, strength, willingness and the ability to exercise authority.
