Elections are ultimately about choices, but more importantly, they are about choices that shape the future. As Nasarawa State gradually moves toward the 2027 governorship election, the people of the state will once again be faced with the responsibility of deciding who should occupy the Government House and steer the affairs of the state for another four years.

For those who believe that Nasarawa needs continuity in development while simultaneously embracing fresh ideas and broader opportunities, the emergence of Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate presents a proposition worth serious consideration.

Wadada has described his governorship ambition as “a call to greater service.” More importantly, he has pledged to build on the developmental achievements of Governor Abdullahi Sule, particularly in infrastructure and human capital development, while introducing his own development blueprint, the WADADA HEARTS Agenda. This, in my view, deserves the attention and support of the people of Nasarawa State.

A vision anchored on continuity and expansion

One of the greatest challenges of governance is the tendency for successive administrations to abandon the projects, policies and institutional foundations of their predecessors simply because political leadership has changed.

Nasarawa cannot afford such a cycle. Where an administration has laid foundations for development, the wiser approach should be to identify what is working, strengthen it, correct what needs improvement and expand its benefits to more citizens.

This is why Wadada’s pledge to build on Governor Sule’s legacies is significant. His message is not one of starting everything from scratch. Rather, it is a promise to consolidate existing gains while introducing new ideas and priorities. For a developing state like Nasarawa, continuity in development planning can provide the stability required to pursue long-term projects and policies.

HEARTS: putting people and communities at the centre

The WADADA HEARTS Agenda is particularly important because it identifies areas that directly affect the everyday lives and economic prospects of citizens.

Among the priorities highlighted by Senator Wadada are rural road networks, agriculture, healthcare, solid minerals exploration, and the security of lives and property.

These are not abstract issues. For the farmer in a rural community, the condition of the road connecting the farm to the market can determine whether agricultural production becomes profitable. For a pregnant woman or a child in a remote community, access to functional healthcare can literally become a matter of life and death. For young people seeking employment, the agricultural and solid-mineral sectors represent opportunities for skills development, enterprise and income generation if properly organised and responsibly developed. And without security, none of these development aspirations can be sustained.

This makes the HEARTS Agenda worthy of a serious conversation across Nasarawa State. The opportunity before Nasarawa with enormous potential. Its proximity to the Federal Capital Territory, vast agricultural opportunities, mineral resources and growing population give it advantages that could be transformed into sustainable economic prosperity.
But potential alone does not create development. It requires purposeful leadership, investment, accountability, continuity and a clear understanding of the needs of the people.

This is where the choice of leadership becomes important. If Wadada is able to translate his proposed agenda into concrete policies, effective institutions and measurable development programmes, his administration could potentially deepen the gains already recorded while opening new areas of opportunity. The people therefore have every reason to examine his agenda closely and demand clarity on how each promise will be implemented.

Lafia and the grassroots question

The recent leadership summit organised by Wadada Friends Forever in Lafia also highlighted another important dimension of the 2027 contest: grassroots participation.

Justice Abdullahi Liman, Rtd., while speaking on “Strengthening Collaboration for Effective Grassroots Mobilization for Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu,” described Lafia as strategic to the politics and governance of Nasarawa State.

That observation deserves attention. Development must ultimately be measured by what happens at the grassroots. A government cannot claim success merely because major projects are concentrated in urban centres. The true test is whether people in rural communities can access roads, healthcare, education, markets, security and economic opportunities.

Therefore, any political agenda that places rural infrastructure and community development among its priorities should be subjected to close public scrutiny—and, if found credible, supported.

Beyond political differences

Senator Wadada has also called on the people of Nasarawa State to put aside their differences and support APC candidates across the various levels of government.

While citizens must always retain their constitutional freedom to choose whoever they believe is best, the larger point is that political disagreements should never become a reason for violence, hatred or destruction.

The Senator’s call for issue-based campaigns is particularly important. The 2027 election should not be reduced to personal attacks and character assassination. It should be an opportunity for candidates to explain what they intend to do differently, how they intend to finance their programmes, and how they will measure success.

Why Wadada deserves consideration

Supporting Senator Wadada’s candidacy should not simply be about supporting an individual. It should be about supporting a development proposition that voters find convincing. His pledge to build on the Sule administration’s achievements provides an argument for continuity.

His HEARTS Agenda provides a framework for addressing critical sectors with emphasis on rural roads, agriculture, healthcare, solid minerals and security speaks to some of the fundamental needs and opportunities of Nasarawa State.

His description of the governorship as a “call to greater service” also places an important responsibility on him: to demonstrate that public office is ultimately about service to the people. If the people of Nasarawa find these propositions credible, then they should not hesitate to give the HEARTS Agenda an opportunity at the ballot box in 2027.

The final decision belongs to the people

Ultimately, democracy belongs to the people. No candidate should be supported merely because of political affiliation, friendship, ethnicity, religion or personality. Candidates should earn the confidence of the electorate through their ideas, competence, character, record and commitment to public service.

For those who believe Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu offers the continuity, fresh thinking and development orientation that Nasarawa requires, the 2027 election provides an opportunity to turn that belief into a democratic choice.

The state has enormous potential. What it needs is leadership capable of converting that potential into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens. The WADADA HEARTS Agenda has been presented as a blueprint for that journey.

The responsibility now lies with Wadada to convince the people that he can deliver it—and with the people of Nasarawa to decide, through their votes, whether they are willing to give him that opportunity.

2027 will ultimately be about more than who occupies the Government House. It will be about the direction Nasarawa State chooses for its next chapter.
