They have come a long way in their relationship, and their bond has remained strong despite their differing ambitions to become the governor of Nasarawa State. Their individual aspirations have not been enough to divide them.
Yes, in Nigerian politics, ambition is never in short supply.
Across the political landscape, many politicians are quick to profess loyalty when the road ahead is smooth. The real test comes when personal ambition collides with the wishes of a political principal. That is where the story of Rt. Hon. Dr. Musa Ahmed Muhammed, the Baraden Nasarawa, becomes particularly interesting.
From every perspective, the decision by Ahmed Musa to step aside from the 2027 governorship contest and throw his weight behind Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu represents a significant political sacrifice. More than simply withdrawing from a race, many people see it as an unmistakable demonstration of loyalty to Governor Abdullahi A. Sule and his preferred succession project.
If one looks closely at the activities of the Baraden Nasarawa in recent times, one could argue that his role in advancing the Governor’s ambition to see Senator Wadada emerge as his successor has been nothing short of remarkable.
Ahmed Musa has moved from pillar to post, engaging stakeholders, building bridges, connecting political actors, and helping to put the pieces of the political puzzle together. In a political environment where interests can change quickly and alliances can be fragile, that kind of political mobilisation requires persistence.
The point is not simply that Musa Ahmed Muhammed eventually stepped down. It is what he did around that decision that makes it politically significant to the people of Nasarawa State.
Ahmed Musa did not merely announce his withdrawal and return to the sidelines. Instead, he continued to mobilise support around the direction chosen by his principal, who also happens to be his friend. Since that decision was made, the Baraden Nasarawa has never relented. He has continued connecting the dots by bringing people, interests, and political structures together around a common Wadada project, which also happens to be his principal’s project.
Governor Sule’s preference for Senator Wadada has created a clear succession conversation within the APC in Nasarawa. For politicians who had their own aspirations, aligning themselves with that direction inevitably meant making difficult decisions.
But for the Baraden Nasarawa, the decision to step down in favour of Wadada was not a difficult one.
That decision deserves to be understood in the context of Nigerian politics, where stepping aside is often easier to announce than to actually implement. It is one thing to say that a party should remain united; it is another to relinquish a personal political ambition and actively work for another aspirant. But that is exactly what the Baraden Nasarawa did, without any qualms.
The Baraden Nasarawa’s conduct towards those who did not align with the Governor’s succession project has also attracted attention. His frankness with political actors who took a different position was commendable.
Of course, political disagreement is legitimate. Those who chose a different path have every right to advance their own ambitions and arguments. Democracy and party politics necessarily involve competing interests.
But there is also something to be said for clarity.
The Baraden Nasarawa has, in the eyes of many people in Nasarawa State, not tried to disguise where he stands. His position has been consistent: support Governor Sule’s direction, promote Senator Wadada’s aspiration, and work towards maintaining cohesion within the APC.
Even Wadada himself, at his welcome rally in Keffi, singled out the Baraden Nasarawa as someone who had publicly acknowledged that he was an aspirant who stepped down in his favour. That moment captured an important feature of the emerging political alignment: people who once had separate ambitions are now working together behind one direction.
The political significance of Musa Ahmed Muhammed’s contribution to Wadada’s project is already evident to many who have followed his activities.
He has shown that political influence is not always measured by occupying the front position. Sometimes, it is demonstrated by one’s ability to mobilise others, negotiate across interests, and make personal sacrifices for a larger objective.
That is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Baraden Nasarawa’s political mobilisation ahead of 2027. He could have insisted on pursuing his own ambition. Instead, he chose to step back and work for the candidate favoured by his principal. He could have remained quiet after withdrawing from the race. Instead, he continued to mobilise.
He could have allowed differences within the party to deepen. Instead, he continued moving from pillar to post, connecting the dots and encouraging political actors to see the bigger picture.
For those who admire Governor Abdullahi Sule’s leadership, that is why Musa Ahmed Muhammed’s role in the emerging Wadada project deserves recognition.
Politics will always produce arguments, disagreements, and competing ambitions. That is normal. What is less common is a politician who, having pursued a major ambition, willingly steps aside and then puts his political energy behind another person’s candidacy.
That is the story the people of Nasarawa State are telling about the Baraden Nasarawa.
And whether one agrees with his political choices or not, there is no denying the central message of his conduct: loyalty means very little when it costs nothing. It is when personal ambition is placed on the line that loyalty becomes a meaningful political statement.
In Nasarawa’s unfolding 2027 political conversation, Musa Ahmed Muhammed has chosen his side. More importantly, he has chosen to work for it.
For his admirers, that commitment to Governor Sule’s succession project—and particularly his effort to build support around Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu—is what makes the Baraden Nasarawa’s intervention so remarkable.
